National Engineer’s Day

On the declaration of August 30 as “National Engineer’s Day” in the Maldives

The Association of Civil Engineers (ACE) warmly welcomes the national declaration of August 30 as “National Engineer’s Day” in the Maldives. This recognition underscores the critical role engineers have played and continue to play in shaping the development and resilience of our island nation.

From safeguarding shorelines to designing sustainable communities, engineers serve at the very foundation of national progress. Infrastructure is more than concrete and steel, it is the framework that enables healthcare, education, commerce, and everyday life to function and flourish. Whether in transport systems, water and energy networks, or climate-resilient structures, the contributions of the engineering profession are both indispensable and transformative.

ACE is hopeful that this new recognition will further strengthen the development of the engineering profession and its practices in the Maldives, encouraging young minds to see engineering as a worthwhile, impactful profession. We look forward to a future where engineers are not only celebrated but meaningfully included in national dialogues, particularly through more consultative, transparent, and inclusive frameworks for the regulation and practice of the profession.

We also take this opportunity to emphasize the importance of a robust STEAM education at the school level and urge the nation to place a stronger priority on nurturing talent in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These fields form the bedrock from which tomorrow’s engineers, and tomorrow’s solutions will emerge.

Let Engineering Day be more than a tribute. Let it be a call to invest, to innovate, and to collaborate for a stronger, smarter, and more sustainable Maldives.
